Hi friends! I hope you’re all having a great week! I literally can’t believe that my first year of college is already done. It has been a whirlwind of firsts, unforgettable experiences, rock bottoms, and in the midst of it all, it has been such a blessing. College has been everything I had hoped it would be and nothing that I expected it to be. It’s insane to reflect on this year and all of the memories made.
This week, I wrote a pair of complimentary poems about fixing and healing. This first poem is about how eager we are to always fix situations. We offer up solutions and try to fix the problems around us. We just desire to make things better all the time.
But sometimes, that’s not what we need. Sometimes in our vulnerable state, we just need someone to be there. Someone to listen as we let it all out. And I know that personally, I fear what someone will say if I express that to them. We feel this pressing need to please even though we are crumbling internally.
So, this poem is called “Fix You.” It comes from a very real place of unvocalized frustration. But in writing it, I caught myself too. Because I find myself trying to fix others and their problems. Writing this has helped me reflect and move towards growth in that area.
Fix You (Part I) I see you, uncertain. Code waiting, unbroken. Pieces of a puzzle to be puzzled. Fix you, I need to fix you. Yet here I am screaming. walls caving, no escaping. Silently I– You need fixing, let me fix you! But I— I need— I know best because I am … I am … I am … I understand, you do not, so let me fix you. And as I unwind I begin to wonder; do you see me or assume you can unmangle my internalized tangles? What if I don't need fixing? What if I need you to just be? Please, just listen to me! ~ AnnaLisa Hutchinson
Be sure to check my page next week because I’ll be posting the complimentary poem to “Fix You.”
Also, if you’ve read this far and are a college student (especially a college freshman) it would mean so much to me if you could fill out this Google Form and let me know some of the things you learned in your first year of college. I’m hoping to share a post of your responses so we can all see that we (1) shared similar struggles and experiences during our first year and (2) to offer some advice for rising college freshmen. Thank you again!
